Earlier this month, I was at the Bremer County fair at the Figure 8 Races. If you’ve never been to one, there are 6-10 cars on a dirt track in the shape of an “8” where the drivers are navigating, trying to maximize speed while slicing through oncoming traffic at the intersection of each lap. It’s loud, it’s fast, there are bound to be collisions, and fun had for all.
Every time there was smoke or steam or some sort of noise coming from one of the cars, the men in the audience would start saying things like “gasket”, “transmission”, “serpentine belt”, etc. It made me giggle to listen to them diagnose the problems from so far away in the stands. There is no doubt in my mind that their guesses were accurate – everyone sitting around me was guys that have tons of experience with equipment of all sizes and the problems that can come with it.
It just made me realize that I am not alone in being someone who enjoys the challenge of solving a problem. We all know people who hop right in to help someone in need… sometimes as a friendly neighbor… sometimes because that little itch of wanting to solve the puzzle first gets the best of them! I think we all have inside of us some need to be challenged. Some challenges we are willing to take on ourselves, some just have too much risk involved to go at it alone, so we ask or hire someone more versed in that area.
This is where professionals come in. At my house, there are a lot of small things that Cody and I are comfortable with trying to figure out ourselves, knowing we can’t hurt much if we screw up, however, if it is electricity related I am not touching it! It scares me to know what can happen if we do something wrong so I (still) call *my dad first :)*, then Etringer’s if it is a bigger project. I am happy to pay them what they’re worth to sleep well knowing it was done right.
This concept is the same as being a Financial Advisor. Some investors are DIYers and do a fine job of accepting and managing the risk of a bad decision. Others would rather pay a knowledgeable professional, lowering the risk of something going awry. To each their own.
Ashlea Jones doesn’t know how electricity works beyond changing a lightbulb. Ashlea Jones doesn’t know how to fix a transmission (or what a transmission looks like). But if you have cash or investments that are old, new, tax-deferred, tax-free, complex, not complex, whatever!
And you need a second set of eyes on it, we can bring value and enhance your ambitions with our team and client-centric approach. I LOVE the journey of helping people find solutions to their financial obstacles. Sometimes it is just a matter of helping them believe in what we can help them achieve. Sometimes it’s plugging in a private investment you don’t have access to on the street.
Other times it can be much more complex like a total rebuild… but when someone walks in with ambitions on their mind, nothing brings us more fulfillment than being able to say with confidence, “We’ve got this!” If you feel there might be more out there than what you’ve been offered so far, let us look under the hood of your portfolio
